Energy poverty worsens women's poverty... The use of rudimentary cooking and lighting equipment has dramatic consequences for the poorest people because they:

  • inhale harmful fumes that claim as many victims as AIDS and malaria combined;
  • spend a significant portion of their time collecting wood or of their budget buying it
  • contribute to the degradation of forest cover through the massive cutting of firewood.

Energy poverty particularly affects women because they are responsible for cooking and supplying wood.

Entrepreneurs du Monde created NAFA NAANA (“The benefit has arrived” in local language) in 2012 to make modern and efficient solutions accessible: solar lamps, gas stoves and improved fuel-efficient fireplaces. This equipment has an immediate impact on the health, budget and environment of families: they improve their living conditions and contribute to reducing their expenses, massive deforestation and indoor air pollution.

The team contributes to the development of the local economic fabric: it has created a range, a brand and a network of franchised retailers. It also works in partnership with associations, women's groups, etc. It raises awareness among populations, promotes products and sets up financial mechanisms (savings, credit, installments) at all levels of the production and distribution chain.

Entrepreneurs du Monde acts as an incubator for Nafa Naana. She supports the team to build a sustainable social enterprise on all levels: legal, human, financial, etc. Nafa Naana has already successfully transformed into a SAS under Burkinabe law. Entrepreneurs du Monde continues to provide it with technical and financial support to help it achieve viability and strengthen its social mission.
